Mr Thomas Structuralism
Summary
Structuralism is breaking the denotations you see in little parts and examine, identifying and analyzing the meaning of those parts and then fit them together, Structuralism theorists are interested in identifying and analysing the structures that underline all cultural phenomena-and not just literature.
In this magazine we see Liam Hemsworth facing towards the camera with his muscles tensed, which can suggest that he is trying to portray every man as masculine and strong, which, however, can discriminate people who are not strong or build like him. The titles on the side can also suggest that this is only for people with a big build as is trying to suggest if your not strong and good build you won't break the 'sex rules' as you will be too weak and useless to doing so. Furthermore, when the magazine uses 'be the man your dog thinks you' this can suggest that you should stand up and be a man that even your dog notices it, however, that can suggest that even tho ur not strong and good build for your dog you will always be a man.
1. The first principle is the domain of the symbolic- they all depend on the real or imaginative the symbolic is where the humans are.
2.Local or positional- structure of interrelated positions. Roles (and interpretation) constntly change, created
3.The difference- humans before receiving what they call reality they sense the difference in the world we create patterns. Everything that is different with these patterns attracts our attention. Patterns, Discrepancy and border.
4.Statues and Structure- Structures are not real but not actual, ideal but not abstract, Ideal it represents ideas about value, structure can give things value
5.Posibilities of different structure- different strucutre and system interact, contain and overlap
6.driving force of structure- A code is an institutionally stablished structure, structure can be dynamic and constantly evelove
7.The subject and agency- Humans interact with structure and constantly reorganise. Subjects are 'intersubjective'
How interpretations change due to certain factors and different scenarios.
The border between pattern and discrepancy, things that are different,e.g to our daily weekend routine it will be different each time and it will seem out of place.
Sometimes can be real like money but a 20 pound note wont cost 20 pounds to be made, it is not actual it is a piece of paper that the government has bought to us and told us to use as money, abstract gives items meaning.
Structure can evolve and change, a CODE is an institutionally stabilised structure.
Things change all the time e.g emotions, this effect of how we behave in certain areas.
Analysis of Vogue Magazine
The cover is the woman, the main image takes the majority of the cover, there are no cover lines except for the writing which is at the bottom and is really small font to give the most attention at the main image. the camera is at a low angle which can show her dominion over us suggesting she is powerful and strong wielded not ready to give up. The use of lighting makes the magazine more happy and noticeable.
