'Neale Genre Theory' Mr Thomas

In the clip from the Magnificant 7, the dual was different than what audience is expecting, Neale Theory can be portrayed in that scene very well as it shows differences and repetition. Straight away we see someone from different ethnicity rather than normal typical cowboy, which can surprise the audience as they could be expecting to see a dressed up cowboy ready for any battle, Some audiences could have been disappointed and some could have been surprised at the action that Fuqua has taken to illustrate that we can all be cowboys. Furthermore, we also get shown a duel between the two cowboys, which we expect to be with guns, well there was a turning point which could have surprised the audience quite a lot, In the duel, we see one guy holding the gun ready to shoot, However, on the other side we see the other cowboy dropped his guns and had nothing to shoot with, which currently surprised the audience, this scene could also add Barters Theory and add enigmas of what will he shoot with? and how is he going to survive?, However, as we hear the shot of the gun, which emphasised go, we see a clear knife hitting the cowboys chest. So this illustrates that Fuqua was trying to add something that evolves rather than being static, what it means by that is he does not want to keep it the same because it can be boring so in order to make it interesting he added a knife instead of a gun. This where  Neale's Theory comes in, Neale said 'genres are instant of repetition and differences', this scene clearly states that he is right, as it's not your typical cowboy movie you would see. It shows differences and repetition, the differences was the knife and the ethnicity of the cowboy and the repetition is the duel between them as you see it in cowboy movies a lot.

Extension

Fuqua has maximised the appeal to the audiences in different ways. He tried to show the audience something different, something they have not seen, however, he did not think of the risk what would happen if the audience did not like it. He had two options to be fair, one not doing it and people just finding the movie as any other cowboy film or him doing it and getting tones of new audiences, so he just went for the risk and done it, some loved it and some did not.

Comments

  1. Stefan, a fair effort, Some understanding of Neale's theory demonstrated, but ideas are hard to follow due to a lack of paragraphing.

EBI - Please outline more clearly how the film uses Western conventions, eg, set, props, costume etc.
Then comment on how the director challenges some conventions and theorise WHY you think the director decided to change things in this way.

L2 - You touch on some relevant points, but avoid mentioning enigmas and Neale's theory in the same paragraph.

Always maintain a formal tone - don't say 'to be fair'

Try to suggest more specifically why you think the director challenged conventions in these ways (eg, having a man of Asian ethnicity and using a knife), other than just to surprise or engage an audience. - Do you think these changes tell us something about this character? - Please answer.
