This Girl Can

Discuss how the use of voice over help to create meaning

In this picture, the voice is contrasted with what we are seeing, as the voice-over mentions 'cute' we don't see a girl that is trying to look cute, we see a woman that is ready for action, ready to go out and show people that woman should not only be represented as cute and beautiful. They should be taken into consideration that they are powerful as much as men are.Furthermore, the voice can help to create a meaning as it is suggesting even though some woman would love the sport they still look cute and beautiful in sports outfit and that they should not care what man say about them.

In what ways can you argue that this shot challenges van zoonen's notion of objectification because of the meaning created by the use of sound, mise-en-scene and camerawork.

In this shot, we can see that van zoonen's notion of objectification is portrayed, usually, bottoms are portrayed as a sexual object in order to attract mans attention. Whereas in this photo the use of the bottom is not trying to be objectified, even though we can argue that it can be as the advert is still showing the woman's bottom making that part of the advert sexual and illustrating the theory of woman always being objectified.Furthermore, the use of mise-en-scene can also reveal the theory of van zone that males are females are suppose to wear tight legging in order to make their bottoms stand out more for male predators. The use of the camerawork can also illustrate that woman are being objectified, the motion of the moving about with her bottom can suggest that she is trying to grab the males attention and pull them in, even though the video is saying woman power is great they are still using some sexual images to objectify the woman.

What is the most effective media language used at this moment? How is this woman represented and how can it be linked to Hooks theory and Gaunlett's theory

The most effective media language used in that moment is a representation, that moment is trying to portray no matter what woman you are, you are still unstoppable because of you're strong and powerful even without the help of men. That moment is showing that not only a man can be injured and damaged and then carry on with their life, it is showing that woman can go through hard times as well and do sport as well, whereas in some cases man who have  injuries as shown in the picture cant be even bothered going back to sport. Therefore, the picture can illustrate that woman are better than man at some things sometimes. This can be linked to Hooks theory as she suggests that woman are powerful and that moment is clearly suggesting woman are powerful no matter what the cases are.

What editing technique is used during this moment? What connotation does it create? What is the significance of the sport selected? How can you link it to Halls theory

The editing used during that moment is continuity editing as it moves from the karate scene into the rugby scene applying the same pice of action, The connotation of the editing style creates that woman can be powerful and strong too, the rugby picture is illustrating that not only man can tackle another man, but woman have the power to do that as well to another woman. The significance of the sport selected (rugby) is that that type of sport is usually for males, not females. However, the video illustrates that woman can play that type of sport, that woman can be angry and vicious as men when it comes to that significant sport. Halls theory can be portrayed here as he suggested that feminism is important, and the picture clearly states it is because a woman can be powerful as much as the man are.

To what extent does the still challenge stereotype? How can you link it to the different ways of feminism and theories like van zoonen and Judah butler?

The picture of the mums holding the children can be stereotyped as woman supposed to stay home and look after the children and let the man do all the work. This picture is highly stereotyped as it illustrates that mothers have to always look after their children no matter what they do or where they go. This can link to van zoonen theory as the woman are being objectified as carrying mothers. her theory can be put forward as she suggested that woman are always objectified in some sort of way, in the picture they are being objectified, making the video seem stereotypical for female targets, as they are watching the video they suddenly see mothers holding kids, which can potentially put them off as they might be trying to be more independent and not look after the child all the time.Furthermore, Judah Butler's theory can also be portrayed in the picture as she suggested that woman are bought up from society, society demonstrates how a woman should act, that picture clearly states how a woman should act, they should always look after their children and never leave them out there sight.

What technique has been used in the following still and what does it suggest about womanhood?

The technique used in the picture is a high angle and it can illustrate that woman are vulnerable and weak because they look small compared to other shots in the video that make the woman look powerful. This shot potentially mean that even though a woman can be powerful and do all the things as men they are still seen as weak from members of society. However, we can argue that even though it is a high angel it is trying to give us a clear image, that woman are powerful together, that they create a great bond that is unbreakable and put a man down. The picture is a high angle to illustrate all the woman together, to connote the greatness of all woman. Hooks theory of woman being powerful can be bought up as the picture outlines the powerfulness of woman when they are united.
