Goodwins Theory is broken into 6 key aspects of music video.
1.A relationship between the lyrics and the visuals.
2.A relationship between the music and the visuals.
3. The genre- relating to the style and iconograpgy or the lyrics, music and visulas.
4.Voyeurism- objectification of woman- the male gaze
5.Narative in ralation to the mix of lyrics, music and visuals
6. Star image- representation of 'character'

A relationship between the lyrics and the visuals.
In this aspect, we look at how the lyrics associated with the visuals, how narative is formed, if there is a story line the viwers will follow, and if the story is loose knite or tight with a very clear message.

 A relationship between the music and the visuals.
elements here are looking at how the music and visuals of a video create a narrative and a story for the viwer and what effect this has.

The genre- relating to the style and iconograpgy or the lyrics, music and visulas.
This elements is pretty self explanatory- looking at what aspects of the video have made its genre clear to the audinces right from the very start of the video and song.

Voyeurism- objectification of woman- the male gaze
Voyeurism is the objectifaction of men and woman in music video in order to get certain elements of appeal for the viwer. This however, often applies far more to woman than man despite it causing and uproar with feminists, it continues to happen.

Narative in ralation to the mix of lyrics, music and visuals
Narrative is the account of conected events in the media texts, basically meaning that it's the story line of a product. However, it is not the storyline as in each specific element of the product, but more of the general apsect of the story and how/why each event is constructed to move the story along.
There are generally 2 narratives in the music video, one being the narrative o the video and the other being the narrative of the song. From this we can look at how the two narratives flow together to make an either contrasting or hybrid narrative.

Star image- representation of 'character'
The star image basically refers to the representation of the 'character' in the video which are often the band mambers/ artists. They are represented in a way that shines them in the spotlight- it is often the singers that are focused on as they are the 'voice' of the band/ their name which is often recognised by their fans. They are in spotlight in order to get their face out into the public and be seen as 'stars' in their fans eyes as well as gain credibility.


  • Music video demonstrate genre characteristics e.g. Stage performance in metal videos dance routine for boy/girl band. This could also go further in that they can also link to film geners-Intertextuality.

A relationship between the lyrics and the visuals. In this part of the music video we can see a long shot of an elderly woman seating on the piano. Furthermore, we can see a small box on top of the piano. This links to Goodwin's theory as in the video we can hear the woman saying 'should we see what Dizzee Rascal is doing today boys and girls' and then straight afterwards she also says 'He is such a Racal' and then we see Dizzee Rascal come out the box. This is linked with Goodwin's theory as it shows us that the  lyrics and she is pronoucing are linked with the visuals we are seeing. Ferguson's theory and other Tasks Mr Thomas

In this magazine Ferguson's theory is applied as it suggests that woman in the magazine are meant to be portrayed as beautiful. The magazine portrayed woman being aspirational as they give the tools, in this case, is the bottled beauty, this tool is given to the woman in the magazine to make them look beautiful, and the woman reading this will construct an image of how they should be looking. Furthermore, the article features a woman who is using the product, she looks beautiful and is showing another woman reader how they should be looking. Moreover, Ferguson's theory is applied to that in many different ways, such as in the image we can see the woman touching her face, this can symbolise that the woman on the cover is suggesting that woman are meant to be more beautiful. As she touches her face with makeup she is suggesting that point. Woman's monthly magazines are more aspirational than weekly magazines? Monthly magazines are seen as more aspirational as their content and images are more aspiring to people as they look up to that person. Furthermore, monthly magazines due to their budget they can afford better qualitty paper, they have more luxurious look and feel which can mean they can engage their audiences as their magazines include high fashion models and better quality quotes, which means the audiance will inspire to look up to them and be like that model. Moreover, monthly magazines open a realm of possabilities for the audiance as they include better information and more description on different information, which allows posabilities for the audinace as they emerge themselves in knowledge of that 'glossies' magazine.
