Video Notes on Minstrel Show
Minstrel Show: A form of entertainment was popular from early 19th to the early 20th century and was founded on the comic enactment of racial stereotypes.
On the surface, minstrelsy seemed to simply reinforce ugly racial stereotypes. It was the most popular form of entertainment for Americans, for about 80 years. It started in the 1840s. It produced the first body of popular pop songs.
They limited offensively exaggerated African-American: Music, Culture, vernacular English,Visible trades and more of grant entertainment. The most common use of this was blackface.
Minstrel show involved white people playing as black people. One stereotype that was being portrayed was looking for a job and not get accepted cuz of their race and in the video, it shows how the person finds the job put works in the zoo with the monkeys. This was a stereotype as people linked black people to monkeys.
A first black face can be traced all the way to Williams Shakespeare 'Othello' out of necessity black people were not allowed to perform on stage. There were blackface performances in America since 1769
Charles Mathews who was considered the father of American minstrelsy
It involved the white people who were painted in black to dance in order to get what they want, This shows stereotype as black people were considered to do extra work for more of what they want.
It is focused on the comic enactment of racial stereotypes.
In these shows, white man blackened their faces with burnt cork to lampoon blacks, performing song and skits that sentimentalized slave life on Southern plantations. Blacks were shown as naive buffoons who sang and danced the dos away, gobbling 'chitlins,' stealing the occasional watermelon, and expressing their inexplicable love for 'ol' mash'
COON- violant and uneducated Adult male
MAMMIE- Overwight , older black maid.
PICKANINNY- Unkept, uneducated child.
