Surrearlism and Soviet Montage

What are the key elements of Surrealism? Surrealism started in 1924 in Paris with Andre Berton, he got inspired by Sigmund Freud- he believed there is deep layer in the human mind where memory and our most basic instinct where stored and he called it the unconscious mind as most of the time we were not aware of it. The primary motivation for all things in life is sex, Berton believed the desire was central to the surrealism vision of love, poetry and liberty it was the key to understanding to human beings.Surrealist liked to put two objects together that were not associated with each other together to make it playful and disturbing at the same time in order to stimulate the unconscious mind. two types of surrealist painting one is about dreams, its the motivation the dreams are based all about different thing but majorly about sex. it was called automatism three association which was designed to reavel the unconscious mind. Surrealism continious with huge influence with culture and...

Task1/Task2 In the music video there are refrences to postmodern effects. For example in the video there is links to horror genre. This is shown when the girl gets dragged in the darkness, this is a typical horror movie scene as in horror movie we always see the victims getting dragged in darkness. Therefore, this texts use the postmodern trait from horror movies in order to create effects to the audience to get into the video more. This is called intertextual refrence as it uses other texts to make the video better. In the music video there is another postmodern reference, which is narrative. In the music video what ever the lyrics are saying we can see it on the screen, this has a narrative as it shows a story behind video. For example when it says 'lady, running down to the reptile' we can see a lady running which shows that there is a story as she is getting to a destination. Therefore, this adds to the postmodern trends. Moreover, there is more reference to postmoder...

Vance Joy Genere Theory

Task 1: "Genre are instance of repetition and and difference"              "Difference is essential to the economy of genre" more repetition wont attract audience. Task 2: Similarities: -They all have bright colours which allows the audience to get attracted to the video. -They all have some sort of flashbacks and they have a concept behind it. -They all have some sort of nature related, they always have a meaning behind their songs. Diffrences - some have more flashbacks in them then others and some portray the flashback in different way. - some have more sophisticated setting then others. -some video have different type darker then brighter colours.

Dizzee Rascal's Dream (Andrew Goodwin's Theory)

Image
A relationship between the lyrics and the visuals. In this part of the music video we can see a long shot of an elderly woman seating on the piano. Furthermore, we can see a small box on top of the piano. This links to Goodwin's theory as in the video we can hear the woman saying 'should we see what Dizzee Rascal is doing today boys and girls' and then straight afterwards she also says 'He is such a Racal' and then we see Dizzee Rascal come out the box. This is linked with Goodwin's theory as it shows us that the  lyrics and she is pronoucing are linked with the visuals we are seeing. A relationship between the music and the visuals.  In this part of the music video we see a long shot of Dizzee Rascal hanging about next to a off licence and him talking about the girls. When they walk past we can hear little bell ring, this can represent the way the puppets are walking. This links to Goodwin's theory as as the digetic sound of the bell ringing can be ...

Video Notes on Minstrel Show

Minstrel Show: A form of entertainment was popular from early 19th to the early 20th century and was founded on the comic enactment of racial stereotypes. On the surface, minstrelsy seemed to simply reinforce ugly racial stereotypes. It was the most popular form of entertainment for Americans, for about 80 years. It started in the 1840s. It produced the first body of popular pop songs. They limited offensively exaggerated African-American: Music, Culture, vernacular English,Visible trades and more of grant entertainment. The most common use of this was blackface. Minstrel show involved white people playing as black people. One stereotype that was being portrayed was looking for a job and not get accepted cuz of their race and in the video, it shows how the person finds the job put works in the zoo with the monkeys. This was a stereotype as people linked black people to monkeys. A first black face can be traced all the way to Williams Shakespeare 'Othello' out...

Poster Analysis

Black and White Minstrel Show In the poster, we can see a figure dressed in a white and two coloured blazer. The background is black and the white clothing and two coloured blazers do not blend in with the background. However, the face of the person is black and all you can see is the mouth and eyes. This can suggest that racial groups were different in the early days and this can suggest they put the black background in order for that person to fit in. It's trying to suggest he is different from white people, his race differs. The fact he blends in makes the figure look like a ghost, it makes him blend in so well that it looks like floating cloths. The fact they made him look like a ghost suggests they want him to be invisible to the world, they do not want him to be seen as much as the white clothing on the frame. This is a stereotype as race's were treated unequally and black people were judged for their look. Some people even considered them unpure because of their colour...

Eminem- Without Music Video Analysis

The music video starts with a close-up of a guy holding his fingers up and counting down from 5. This can represent that the music video we are about to watch is something different not ordinary to many viewers. This contrasts with other music videos, we know this because in another music video it starts off simple with like a nice background, such as sunny places or brighter lighting. Whereas, this video is darker and shadier and is not normal. The fact that the guy puts his fingers up adds to that shadier idea, it suggests that the music video we are about to witness is something new to the eye of the B-C category audiences. After that section, it pans toward the screen, which is filled with blue colour and the title says 'The Eminem Show' the blue background can make it friendly as blue connotes happiness, this contrasts from the start which was darker and make audiences realise that the video, after all, won't be dark and woeful.  The Title can represent man...

Shiro's Story Andrew Goodwins's Theory

Image
At the start of the music video we see a close up shot of shiro's face, which looks determind and serious, this can symbolise that Shiro's a serious character. This link to the context, which is urban and we know is urban becuase we see Shiro's and his friend in a car exchanging money, which can symbolise that they are in a dodgy business meaning the area they live in has high crime rates and people are doing anything to get money. Furthermore, this looks to Andrew Goodwins theory as the close up of Shiro's face links with the words that are being bought up from Shiro, which are 'who wins this race is the gretest' therefore, the visuals have to link with the lyrics/words to make the video flow smoothly. Moreover, the shots we see after the close up of his face are shots of him and his daughter, this can symbolise that shiro has a family and the video is showing the viwers that he does.

Postmodern Music Video Analysis

Young Thug-Wyclef Jean  We know this a postmodern music video for several reasons. One reason this is a postmodern text is because it  includes parody. One example of parody in this music video is the props that are used in the video. In music videos we usually see luxury cars and luxury houses, these type of props and locations cannot richness and wealth. However, in the music video we do see luxury houses but instead of real cars we notice toy cars, this gives the comic effect to the audiences. This also makes them aware that music videos do not always have to be luxuries in order to satisfy their needs. By adding the toy cars allows the audiences to enjoy the video and be jolly. Whereas, always having luxury items in a music video might make the audiences woeful that they are not living the same life as them. This also adds playfulness to the music video which enhances the postmodern features. Another postmodern feature, which adds a comic effect is when we see the children...

Andrew Goodwin's Theory

Goodwins Theory is broken into 6 key aspects of music video. 1.A relationship between the lyrics and the visuals. 2.A relationship between the music and the visuals. 3. The genre- relating to the style and iconograpgy or the lyrics, music and visulas. 4.Voyeurism- objectification of woman- the male gaze 5.Narative in ralation to the mix of lyrics, music and visuals 6. Star image- representation of 'character' A relationship between the lyrics and the visuals. In this aspect, we look at how the lyrics associated with the visuals, how narative is formed, if there is a story line the viwers will follow, and if the story is loose knite or tight with a very clear message. A relationship between the music and the visuals. elements here are looking at how the music and visuals of a video create a narrative and a story for the viwer and what effect this has. The genre- relating to the style and iconograpgy or the lyrics, music and visulas. This elements is pretty self ex...

Gerbner Theory and Power Point work Mr Thomas

Image
I agree with this theory if a person watches the media for a short period of time he might not get influenced straight away because he might interpret the message and realise its a false meaning. However, Gerbner suggested that if a person watches the media for a longer period of time it will shape and influence the way people perceive the world around them. This can mean over a longer period of watching the media people will interpret the message given to them and will make more sentence of the message. This was called cultivation theory, this means the media encodes the messages to the viewers and they start decoding over a longer period of time. Moreover, the message that's constructed to the viewers can be interpreted differently according to the viewer, some viewers might take the message in and share it, whereas others will take the message and forget about it. Therefore, Gerbner suggested you have to watch the media for longer to take the message in deeply...

Ferguson's theory and other Tasks Mr Thomas

Image
In this magazine Ferguson's theory is applied as it suggests that woman in the magazine are meant to be portrayed as beautiful. The magazine portrayed woman being aspirational as they give the tools, in this case, is the bottled beauty, this tool is given to the woman in the magazine to make them look beautiful, and the woman reading this will construct an image of how they should be looking. Furthermore, the article features a woman who is using the product, she looks beautiful and is showing another woman reader how they should be looking. Moreover, Ferguson's theory is applied to that in many different ways, such as in the image we can see the woman touching her face, this can symbolise that the woman on the cover is suggesting that woman are meant to be more beautiful. As she touches her face with makeup she is suggesting that point. Furthermore, the image can symbolise that using the bottle beauty product will simply give you the ideal more beautiful look that the woman ...

Ocalan's angels Mr Thomas

Young Woman in the magazine are represented in a way that opposes to a woman being housewives and mothers only. Van Zoonen's theory states that the underlying frame of the woman in they belong to a family and domesticated life, These representations the Van Zoonen suggested are said a lot in most of the magazines about the woman. However, this magazine opposes Van Zoonen's suggestion as the magazine suggests that young woman are joining the army to fight for ISIS.  This magazine shows that woman can make a difference as much as the man does. So, therefore, woman need to stop being represented as the housewives and do not need to be forced to live in a domestic live style as they make a difference by winning the fight. This magazine also opposes to the ideology that man are the only ones that need to go to work and look after the family. This magazine shows the ideology is wrong as it shows that woman are eager in joining the fight, this can suggest that not only man are suppose...
